Cambodia Ministry

Cambodia

The Kingdom of Cambodia (formerly known as Khmer) borders Thailand to the west and north-west, Laos to the north-east, Vietnam to the east and south-east, and the Gulf of Siam to the south. Phnom Penh, the capital, has a population of about 1.69 million (2021).

Cambodia is a post-war reconstruction country. More than 80% of the population follows the national religion of Buddhism, and the need for evangelism is great. The Khmer Rouge’s coup d’état and civil war in the 1970’s caused the almost complete disappearance of the young and the intellectuals in the country, which caused indelible pain to Cambodians.

Although Cambodia’s economy has developed rapidly in recent years, most people still live below the poverty line, and there is a serious problem of children dropping out of school in the country. Over the years, Alliance Global Serve has practiced with individuals and the whole community the great mission of “sharing the life-changing news of Jesus Christ to the unreached” through poverty alleviation and high-quality education programs.

Overview of Ministries in Cambodia

Latest Development

The Covid-19 pandemic seems to have disrupted our 2020 plan, but God has prepared another script for the team to discern and follow God’s timing and direction. A village church has been successfully built and commissioned. This church will be a beacon in the village and guide people to the path of eternal life. During suspension of in-class teaching activities of the Bahuy AGS Primary School, the teachers responded by going to students’ homes to conduct group lessons. They help the students with English classes and homework. In 2020, the Cambodian Team experienced possibility out of a seemingly impossible situation and witnessed the grace of God everywhere.

Training and Discipleship

We have experienced an unusual but graceful year in 2020. All activities have almost ceased, but we have seen God’s plan and will everywhere. Starting in February, under pandemic restrictions, short-term mission team from other places are not allowed. We concentrated on equipping college students so that they can take root in their faith and learn evangelistic skills. In July, the College Students Fellowship was established. Since out-of province travels were restricted, we used video and online services to provide training and development for pastors and teachers in other provinces. Praise the Lord, our connection with them was better than expected.

Education and Poverty Alleviation

For education and poverty alleviation ministries, we established and supported kindergartens and primary schools in Cambodia through our partner Bright Community Cambodia Organization (BCC). In addition, we are supporting the construction and startup of a new vocational middle school. For details, please refer to the school website:

Fundraising for School Building

The volunteer Engineering Team for the vocational school project has also made tireless efforts to finalize the building plans so that the project can be started when sufficient construction funds are raised; at the same time, the local primary six students and secondary school students also took part in the promotion activities organized by AGS. With teamwork, the common goal is to establish a new vocational school in the village. We looking forward to completion of the school project in one year, and continuing the mission to transform lives with education and truth.

Life Ministries

In 2021, we will continue to focus on building the school, improving the teaching quality of teachers and strengthening the spiritual life of believers. The team of staff in Phnom Penh will continue to cultivate local staff and 9 sponsored university students with a spirit of whole-person care. Concurrently, preachers in other provinces have deepened their faith in God’s Words, established a vigorous Christian community, lived out the truth and led people to know the truth.

This year, there are 3 short-term mission volunteers serving students and churches locally. We need to recruit more teachers who are passionate about education, and believers who love to preach and teach the Bible, and build up the Christian community in Cambodia together. May the Lord’s will be done!
